Sponsored swim soaks up £1000 for  9 year old Farren! - Summer 2010

It's a family affair....

Nadya Carter tells GUCH her 9 year old son was inspired by his uncle to raise over £1000 for GUCH PA

Faren's uncle, Sacha Malley, had a gruelling 11 hour heart operation in April at the Royal Brompton Heart and Lung Hospital in London. There were complications during the operation and the heart surgeon had to rebuild Sacha's aorta. This was his 4th major heart surgery. He had his first 39 years ago, when he was just 11 months old, then again at age 5 years and 12 years, before the most recent, 3 months ago. Faren was unable to visit Sacha in London so he wanted to do something himself to say thanks to all the people who looked after his uncle. Faren decided to swim 100 lengths and went out collecting sponsors from local businesses, family, friends and staff at Constable Lee Primary School in Rossendale (Lancashire), where he is a Year 5 pupil. Faren's dad set up a web site on 'just giving' which has raised over £700 so far. The total, including sponsors from the sponsor forms is just over £1000. Donations are still coming in so we will send the sponsor form money to GUCH as soon as we have the final amount. We think Faren's swim was great (100 lengths in 70 minutes, swimming front crawl throughout and doing tumble turns for the last 10 lengths) and Sacha said himself that he'll be joining Faren next year...so it may become an annual event! We would like to thank the staff at the Royal Brompton, and Sacha would like to say a special thanks to Mr Petrou, the surgeon who carried out the operation. He and his team were fantastic!
