GUCH Statement on Ebstein’s anomaly
Ebstein's anomaly is an abnormality of the tricuspid valve - which may or may not be associated with other congenital heart problems (including atrial septal defect and Wolf Parkinson White syndrome).Ebstein's anomaly can present in neonatal life or in later life. Indeed it may be first detected in old age. It is thus a condition which has a wide variability.
Patients with Ebstein's anomaly should be seen and assessed at a dedicated GUCH Specialist Centre where the Specialist GUCH Cardiologist will determine the treatment and investigations that will then occur. Any accredited GUCH cardiologist will be able to make that assessment.
Surgery of the tricuspid valve anomaly in Ebstein's is technically challenging and may be limited to only a few centres in the UK.
Insertion of pacemakers and electrical ablation should only be undertaken in centres with high volume GUCH cases and not in general adult cardiology centres.
